Tools of the trade

All members of GCSAR are trained to be proficient in the use of the good ol' compass.   They are required to know every aspect of map reading and interpretation.   Once the basic skills are acquired, they move on to using the more modern GPS devices.  GCSAR uses a portable computer and the latest mapping software to keep track of and to direct field teams who regularly radio their positions back to the Incident Command Post.

GCSAR keeps at least two copies of every 7.5-minute USGS topo map (showing Grand County) at their headquarters building.  We also have those maps on CDs that integrate with mapping software...and they are loaded onto both the main computer at the "shed" and onto the portable computer.  Our mapping program of choice is NGS TOPO.  Utilizing a portable, battery-powered printer, we have the capability to print maps in the field.
