Arch, beyond Devils Garden. So we did. 00- 57 9- 11- 00 Search Moab Rim The call came as an overdue hiker who had gone up the Moab Rim chairlift. We mobilized Nancy and Shalla with Jeff to go get a scent article and go up the lift. Frank and Jennie were to hike up the Hidden Valley trail and Bego and Sam were to take the 6 wheelers up the Moab Rim jeep route. Josh was all amped to dirt bike up. Just as we were about to pounce, a series of phone calls by 1T8 led to the missing hiker. She was out in Arches, hiking to Delicate de Arch in the full moon. Oh? Comments: 00- 58 9- 13- 00 Dehydrated boater on the Green River, Bull Canyon, mile 84 From down on the Green River--- satellite phone call to sat phone company, they call Canyonlands NP, they call Grand County, they call San Juan Air Care helicopter. The group rode ahead telling the subject that camp was near and it would be obvious. The subject missed camp and kept riding, way up there. He was located 8 1/2 miles beyond camp in Fisher Valley. Comments: 00- 63 9- 30- 00 Broken Leg SRBT Hooray for cell phones. And GPSs- we even got coordinates to aim at. He was a broken leg. We did the Slickrock Ambulance Assist boogie. Comments: 00- 64 10- 7- 00 Search because of a weird sound like a hurt child or other animal A hasty search, then a highly modified grid search of the area from 500 West to
Bartlett Circle. It was decided that the noise was an animal but that we would respond
again if there was a report of a missing child. 00- 65 10- 8- 00 Overdue Bikers on the Gemini to Poison Spider way up there. Our plan was to send 2- 4 wheelers up from Poison Spider parking lot, 2 up from the Gemini Road, a hiker up the Portal Trail and a searcher in the Gemini area. The subjects showed up at the Poison Spider parking lot as we did. Comments: The were told by someone at a local bike shop that the trail would take X hours. At X hours plus several, they were still miles from the end of the trail...darkness setting in...and unable to determine where the trail went. Trouble is- alot of bike shops folks are gonzo riders who can do the trails much faster than the typical biker. They should stop doing this and give more realistic ride times to the customers. Responders: Jeff, Frank, Sam, Nancy, Lloyd New Member- George Dehn 1 T 8 3 4 00- 66 10- 15- 00 Biker Down on SRBT Possible back and rib injuries. Another ambulance assist with our usual SRBT stuff. We started hiking up the trail with EMS folks and the backpackable Stokes and wheel to meet with a biker that incurred a severe laceration just below the knee. Word got to us that the injured biker was hiking out. We were also informed that there was a second injured subject up there so we kept going. Word filtered down the trail that this subject had rigged a bike tire tube sling thingy and was hiking out also. The following is a list of what's in a lightweight basic, personal technical pack which Frank has put together and will keep in his ready pack. It contains a personal ascending/descending system as well as the components of a basic personal raising and lowering system...and 75 feet of rope. If you put one of these kits together, you MUST realize that this stuff is NOT meant for a rescue load...and you must be extremely vigilant and careful when using the 8mm escape line...watch edges, small rodents with sharp teeth, etc. It is not a replacement for any of the regular stuff we use in technical rescues. Most members of the rock team have so much gear hanging from their regular (and heavy) rescue harnesses that we only carry them when we know we have a technical rescue. This gear all fits in a medium stuff sack...about 12"x7"...and weighs only about six or seven pounds. Frank's Kwika Tech Pack: Climb Moab Stuff Sack ($19.95...from Kevin's Shop)
Excerpt from an email by Frank to Jeff: "If you've been in the shed lately, you probably saw the discharging system I rigged for the Bosch batteries...none of the batteries were recharging to more than 40-60%...no matter how many times we put them in the charger...and at about $350 each, we can't afford to keep buying new batteries. But after being put on the discharger once, all three batteries recharged to 100%...five lights showing on each one! They're all in the drill pack now...but we may need to discharge them every couple of months...takes several days to discharge each one." The discharger consists simply of a rubberized lightbulb socket with two leads (available at just about any hardware store), two alligator clips crimped onto those wires, and a 15-watt light bulb. |
