                                COLD WEATHER AND ALTITUDE

Even in the desert cold injuries can be a problem. There is little humidity to hold heat from the day.  Temperatures can drop quickly.  Freezing temperatures are NOT needed for hypothermia to set in.

The La Sal mountains begin 15 miles to our southeast. Avalanches happen here.  You are the person most likely to be able to help other members of your group if they become injured or are trapped in an avalanche. Learn to prevent problems.

                                             WARM WEATHER

Dehydration, hyponatremia, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke and  are all dangers on the Colorado Plateau.

The desert affects everyone. Sweat, low humidity and wind will pull water and salts from a person. As they become dehydrated, it affects their mind as well as the rest of their body. If they try to prevent it by drinking too much water, this can be deadly too.

The rescuer can be just as much a victim. Learn the signs and symptoms. Watch yourself and your
                                                              team members.

Management of Heat Illnesses      Hotkey to a U.S. Army site
This U.S. Army site stresses the progressive nature of problems caused by heat. Recovery from dehydration and/or hyponatremia is not fast.
Prevention is the preferable route. Some of the terms used are different from those we normally hear.

                                                                  MAPS

These are the bread and butter of SAR work. We use them to figure out where someone may be, how to get to them and how to give directions to others, even how best to lead someone back to the road. A GPS with an extra set of batteries is nice but practice with a compass and map is a must.
